The history and foundation of research, Innovation and Technology
The South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) was transformed from an Agricultural Institute to a modern institution of higher learning and has become a leader in the development and expansion of the opportunities for higher education and research in agriculture, forestry, mining, energy, water and environmental sciences on Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs). The institution has also strategically positioned itself to be a globally recognized University guided by its vision and mission that are aligned to the global millennium development goals (MDGs) and the national development blueprint, the Kenyan Vision 2030, which recognize that integration of science, technology and innovation (ST&I) is vital for development. The University directorate of Research and Technology aspires to contribute towards training manpower in science and participate in generating knowledge, technologies and innovations that contribute to national development while maintaining relevance and global competitiveness.

The Directorate of Research, Innovation and Technology
The directorate is established according to SEKU Statute XVII to coordinate: research, extension, consultancy services, vocational training, and document production of education materials, seminars, workshops, conferences and symposia. This and other activities have being mainly in areas of agriculture, forestry, mining, energy, water and environmental sciences on Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs).
The University has developed research facilities that will be accessible to academic researchers, research fellows, and many other interested collaborators. The institution has signed several memoranda of understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration and networking for research and development. Especially using the triple helix model shown below:

The triple helix model which is being applied in SEKU to enhance sustainable market-driven research in the ASALs.

Strategic Plan for Research and Innovation & Technology

The strategic plan provides the general guidelines for the directions which South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) shall take to make an impact in the newly globalized competitive research environment. Although there has been some paradigm shifts in several study fields, the strategic plan is firmly guided by University mission, vision and values.
The Kenya government and other funding bodies have annually been urging Universities to make research and innovation a core element of their operations so as to make contributions in national and regional economic growth. Therefore, SEKU is resolutely committed to be a center of excellence in research and innovation. The indicators of the research, innovation and technology performance are postulated to be the quality of researchers and innovators we produce, the impact of innovation and research projects we undertake, and the scope of the strategic partnerships we establish.
Our general strategic objectives shall revolve around five themes: Innovation, Research, Technology, Partnership and Community service.
After research, SEKU expects publications, prototypes, patents, products to be made for income generation and economic growth.

Prof. Mary Mburu (holding a white bag) leads SEKU school of Environment, School of Hydrology and Water Resources, School of Agriculture and Veterinary Services, School of Pure and Applied Sciences partnering with a Belgium University (VU) and Moi University of Kenya to research on sustainable live hood in the ASALs (2015).

Research Institutes for Income Generation in South Eastern Kenya University

For SEKU to be able to fulfil its mandate, the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Technology is facilitating and mobilizing the reinforcement of the current teaching with research and income generation activities. This can be done through visionary departmental collaboration in various viable projects as shown below. The departments involved are seeking for funding and external collaborations.
