Directorate of ICT

Director ICTToday, information technology encompasses more than just computer literacy; it involves how computers work and are used not only for information processing but for research, and problem solving too.
Over the years, the ICT Directorate has registered remarkable achievements. Notable innovations include the implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system that seamlessly integrates all the functions of the University from finance, procurement, human resource and academic departments. So far, 16 modules have been installed, tested, commissioned and implemented. The system is able to track a student from the time of enrollment to the time of graduation to become an alumnus. The system is linked to the disappearance of the long queues that were the norm at the finance department when students tried to pay fees in large number. Students can now deposit fees in the bank and the same is reflected on their portal. What’s more, they can book hostels and check fees online.
Five ultra-modern computer laboratories have been set up and connected to high speed internet complete with projectors for presentations and other application software. The University is in the process of installing IP PABX converged communications system with VOIP capability - the latest technology for voice communications. The system has a capacity to handle 1000 users all on IP network.
The University is working on a structured data and voice cabling with a fibre backbone covering a distance of three kilometres in the Main Campus for fast transfer of data over the network. SEKU’s interactive website provides a forum where all issues of both academic and research nature are highlighted and canvassed.
SEKU has subscribed to over 90MB of internet bandwidth from KENET and this has greatly improved internet speeds in the University and its campuses. It is also in the process of installing high resolution CCTV cameras in all the buildings at the main campus. This will be integrated into the Biometric system enabling the tracking to know who is in the University at any given time as well as capturing of biometric details of students, staff and visitors. The Directorate is also working on an e-learning systems and a pilot e-learning programme is being tested. This will enable students to learn through an open distance learning mode off campus.
