Dr Harun KirukiThe Gender Mainstreaming Unit (GMU) at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) was formed in 2012 to respond to the growing needs of Gender mainstreaming within SEKU community. Since its inception the unit has made great strides. We have a functional gender mainstreaming committee and a coordinator. We have developed both the Gender Mainstreaming and Sexual and Gender based violence prevention policies which guide all our activities.
As a higher institution of learning, we know that our growth and success will depend on how well we marshals the strengths of women and men to achieve our core mandate. The mission of the unit is to mainstream gender issues in all University policies, programmes, establishment and strengthening of existing partnerships and collaborations in gender and education. Our vision is an enabling environment where full potential of women and men both students and staff will be realized.
Among our services include support to survivors of gender based discrimination and violence, advising the university on compliance to gender issues, organizing trainings and sensitizations on gender issues to both students and staff among other services.
The GMU has an active Gender champions club whose work is to keep the gender conversation going on and on. We welcome interested members of staff and students to join us so that together we can advance the gender equality agenda.
Some of our recent achievements include the finalizing of Sexual and gender based violence prevention policy, conducting the gender survey and successful celebration of the 2022 International Women’s Day at SEKU. Currently we are holding a series of virtual sensitizations for both staff and students on a wide range of topics including gender Mainstreaming and the place of boy child in the gender equality agenda.
