The 1st SEKU Students Innovation Challenge kicked off in vibrant fashion at the main campus of South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) on 15th and 16th April 2026, bringing together bright student minds under the theme “Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Societal Transformation.” The event marks a significant milestone in nurturing a culture of creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship among students.
Students from various campuses are actively participating in the challenge, showcasing innovative ideas aimed at addressing real-world societal issues. The organizing committee, co-convened by Dr. Gideon Rotich and Dr. Sedina Misango comprised of academic and administrative staff from various schools and directorates of the University all who have played a key role in ensuring the success of the event.
The occasion was officially opened by Ms. Phyllis Mbiyu from Viktoria Ventures, who delivered an inspiring keynote address on innovation. She emphasized that innovation begins with discomfort, urging young innovators to embrace the uncertainty and challenges that come with doing things differently. She further highlighted the importance of keeping the end-user in mind when developing solutions, ensuring that innovations remain relevant and impactful.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor expressed his delight at the breadth and quality of innovations presented. He commended the students for developing ideas that are not only technologically driven but also deeply rooted in solving local challenges. He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to supporting student innovators, pledging institutional backing to help transform their ideas into practical solutions that can benefit society.
The challenge continues to provide a dynamic platform for students to collaborate, experiment, and push the boundaries of innovation, positioning SEKU as a hub for transformative ideas that can drive sustainable development.
