SEKU Hosts Innovation Training Programme Ahead of Student Innovation Challenge.

In preparation for the upcoming Student Innovation Challenge, South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) organized a comprehensive Innovation Training Programme aimed at equipping students with essential skills in creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship. The mentorship-focused session was proudly sponsored by the Chain Project, whose support continues to empower student-led innovation initiatives.

The event brought together students, trainers, and university officials for a full day of intensive learning and engagement.

Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Eliud Muli. Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic, Research, and Innovation), who underscored the university’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and research excellence among students.

The morning sessions focused on cultivating an innovation mindset and identifying opportunities. Dr. Sedina Misango, idea generation techniques and design thinking principles by Prof. Josphart Kimatu
Mr. Jenner Akwale, an external trainer from JKUAT (DIPUIL). His session on “From Idea to Prototype” provided students with practical insights into transforming abstract ideas into tangible solutions and understanding market needs and crafting compelling value propositions. He emphasized the importance of aligning innovations with real customer needs to ensure relevance and sustainability.

Students were also trained on innovation pitching and presentation skills, where they learned how to effectively communicate their ideas to judges, investors, and stakeholder. An essential component of the upcoming challenge.
The training also addressed the critical aspect of ethics in innovation, with Dr. Matthews Okoth highlighting the need for responsible and sustainable solutions, an interactive Q&A session followed by Dr. Fransisca Mwangangi and Dr. Benson Ojwang, giving students the opportunity to seek clarification and share their perspectives.

Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators
The Innovation Training Programme marked a significant step in preparing students for the Student Innovation Challenge. With the support of the Chain Project and dedicated facilitators, participants left the session better equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to develop impactful solutions.

SEKU continues to position itself as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, nurturing students to become problem-solvers and change-makers in society.
